Rés0Pest

Rés0Pest : A national experimental network to analyse pesticide-free cropping systems in arable crops

Rés0Pest is an experimental network whose purpose is to produce new references and knowledge for the design of innovative cropping systems less reliant on pesticides, using Integrated Pest Management principles by combining different techniques to enhance biological regulations in order to limit the damages caused by pests in arable crops.

Objectives of the network

  • Designing and testing cropping systems under the constraint of using no pesticide and assessing their agronomic, environmental and socio-economic performances;
  • Analysing the effects of pesticide-free cropping systems on pest populations and natural biological regulations.

 Partnership

  • A unique experimental tool to support innovative programmes in Agroecology

The network includes eight long-term experiments implemented since 2012 in INRA experimental units and one agricultural high school (EPLEFPA Toulouse-Auzeville), in a wide range of production situations in France.
Rés0Pest is supported by the Integrated Pest Management network of INRA and CIRAD and has some partnership with research units of INRA.
Rés0Pest is funded within the Ecophyto French national Plan (DEPHY-EXPE, 2012-2017) and was initially supported by the GIS GC-HP2E.
There is also a close relation with the Institut LaSalle Beauvais which perform the DEPHY EXPE trial Sca0Pest, a pesticide-free cropping system in agroforestry.

  • A network in connection with other networks and partners, both at local and national level

Rés0Pest is a member of the “Innovative cropping systems” Joint Network of Technology.
Rés0Pest is also in connection with the experimental network of the french technical institute for organic agriculture (ITAB).

  • At the local level , advisors, farmers, engineers of agricultural technical institutes, researchers, professors and suppliers are associated to the performing of each trial.
  • The Res0Pest network represents a unique experimental tool in France and probably in Europe for research programs related to disciplines related to agroecology. Currently, some specific protocols are being written to characterise pest injuries levels and the establishment of biological regulations, in connection with another specific project. New collaborations have to be initiated and developed in order to fully take advantage of the network.

A long-term experimental network

  • 2011: preliminary study funded by the GIS GC-HP2E.
  • 2012 : setting up of the network: definition of a common set of constraints and objectives, conception of the cropping systems, choice of experimental plots, description of the initial situation of each trial.

2012 – 2013 : first year of experimentation, except for the trial of Grignon which started in 2008.
A minimal duration of 6 years and more if possible, in order to experiment the whole rotation and to permit the analyse of the long-term effects of cropping systems on the environment.
