Fagaceae

This family gathers together numerous species, but principally three genera: Castanea, Fagus and Quercus

Here we group together sweet chestnut, beech, pedunculate oak and sessile oak. In the Aphid key folder simplified keys based on photos or morphological criteria are provided to help you identify aphid species.

This is cultivated for its wood used for construction timber, flooring, barrel-making but also for its fruit: chestnuts.

Beech (Fagus sylvatica)

The beech is a tree used mainly for firewood, carpentry or as source of fibres for the paper industry.
It is also appreciated as an ornamental species, with a wide diversity of horticultural varieties.  Cultivars exist that have crimson foliage, with dentate leaves, with weeping or narrow column shape.
Sometimes it has been used for the extraction or manufacture of diverse substances, like creosote.

Oak is the most widespread tree in France, used in carpentry, furniture and cabinet making.
