Aphids

The different species of aphids

Nearly 4700 species have been recorded worldwide, 900 of them living in Europe. Here we illustrate their world, with a number of selected species that exert strong effects on agriculture.

Their fecundity is high, they have a diversity of modes of reproduction, compex life cycles invovling alate (winged) and apterous (wingless) individuals that exploit host plants. These strategies make the aphids a formidable force threatening the world of plants grown for crops.

For each species, you will find a files showing:

  • morphological characters; for some species also a detailed identification file.
  • life cycle(s)
  • host plants
  • particular characteristics
  • agronomic impact
  • range of natural enemies

The illustrations bring to the fore the full panoply of colours and forms to be found, in a living world that operates at such a small scale.
Although often green, aphids can display a whole spctrum of colours.
Some species even produce clones of differing colours (green or pink clones in Acyrthosiphon pisum, green or orange in Sitobion avenae, Macrosiphum euphorbiae for example).
