This genus is characterized by a long pointed rostrum and short cone-shaped cornicles..

This genus comprises about 200 described species in the world. It colonizes conifers (Pinaceae and Cupressaceae). In Europe, there are 40 or so species. All species of this genus are monoecious. They can live on any of the host-plant’s levels (roots, trunk, main branches, minor branches, needle or leaf).

Colonies are often visited by ants.

A parasitoid, Pauesia spp., from the family Braconidae, is specific to the genus Cinara.
