Cryptomyzus ribis (Linné, 1758)

Redcurrant aphid

1.2-2.5 mm.
Aphid whitish to yellowish, antennae long and fine, presence of long capitate hairs on abdomen and head.
Apterous: antennae longer than body with a processus terminalis long and fine; cornicles long, almost transparent, cauda short and rounded.
Alate: yellowish with abdominal patch notched, antennae longer than body with numerous rhinaria, cornicles long and slightly pigmented, cauda short.

Dioecious holocyclic.

Primary hosts: Ribes rubrum (redcurrant).
Secondary hosts: Stachys sp (hedgenettle and so on)

The presence of aphids causes characteristic embossing effect on the leaf blade in the form of prominent blisters on the upper side of the leaf. Colonies develop on the underside in the cavity so formed. The colonized leaves of redcurrants turn crimson red whereas on blackcurant the foliage becomes yellowy-green.
