Morphology

Medium-sized species, this ladybird measures 3-5 mm long. Black and yellow, it is ornamented with a broad black medial line separating the elytra.
The black spots on the pronotum can be fused to form a kind of crown.
The elytral spots have a roughly square contour which together resemble a checkerboard.
The larva measures 5-6 mm.

Diet

The 14-spotted ladybird feeds on a wide diversity of aphids and can also take advantage of a highly varied secondary diet.

Habitat

This species is highly common. Its period of activity is relatively short: from the end of April to beginning of October.
The insect essentially frequents herbaceous plants, but it also occurs on some ligneous species: willow, hazel and oak.
It is present on fruit trees and large-scale crops.
