The adults are brown, reddish brown, beige or light grey and are nocturnal. They are hardly to be seen in daytime. They seldom move around by flight. If disturbed, they fall to the ground and remain in a state of mimetic immobility.
The eggs are pink and stuck on a support without pedicel. The cocoons are ovoid, fragile and transparent.
The larvae have a thin fusiform body, elongate with little or no hairs and never any tubercles. The mouthparts are shorter than the head ; the longer ones are always less arcuate than in the green lacewings.
