Full title: ECOLOGICAL SERVICES OF LEGUMES FOR NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS BIO-GEOCHEMICAL CYCLES AND C SEQUESTRATION IN CEREAL CROPPING SYSTEMS IN AFRICA AND THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN
The FABATROPIMED project aims to increase the ecological services of legumes in cereal cropping systems. In a context of limited land availability and low mineral fertilizer inputs, as in most developing countries, we hypothesize that rhizobial symbioses that are efficient in the use of phosphorus (EUP) also promote an efficient fixation of atmospheric nitrogen (FSN), thus increasing productivity, inducing a virtuous cycle of fertility in cereal cropping systems in association or rotation with legumes, that may also contribute to C sequestration. Three ecological areas will be compared: Mediterranean areas, both to the north (France) and the south (Morocco, Tunisia) of the Mediterranean sea; Sudano-Sahelian areas (Burkina Faso); and tropical areas (Madagascar). In all these cases, with a wide range of climates and soils, the efficiency and suitability of cereal cropping systems in association or rotation with grain legumes will be compared. The project will also promote the creation of a pan-African network to work on this topic.
The objectives of FABATROPIMED are intended to be achieved by creating an integrated multidisciplinary research plan organized in six Work Packages. Field Activities are included in WP1 and WP2, in relation with innovation and sustainability in WP5, and laboratory work in WP3 and WP4. Management activities will be in WP6.
