Présentation of DEXiFruits

A tool to assess the sustainability of fruit-production systems.

What is DEXifruits and of what use is it?

DEXiFruits is a computer tool for multicriteria assessment of the sustainability of orchards.

It can be used for all types of tree-fruit production (i.e., whether with pits or seeds). It has, however, been specifically parametrised for eating apples, cider apples and peaches.

It assesses economic, environmental and social performances of practices of an orchard in its context and can identify its strengths and weaknesses. It also can ease facilitation of a workgroup by accompanying reflection on the performances of existing systems or development and implementation of innovative strategies.

Who created it?

The tool was co-constructed by INRA, CTIFL, IFPC and AGROCAMPUS OUEST of Angers. It has required the technical and scientific experience and skills of more than 100 people outside the project for 8 years.

Who should use it?

  • farmers, individually or in groups, who wish to assess the sustainability of their orchards and the latter’s strengths and weaknesses
  • agricultural advisers and instructors, who will find an aid for discussion and facilitation to ease exchanges about sustainability and the design of innovative systems
  • individuals in research and development, who can use the tool for their experiments and studies

Attention:

  • It is neither a certification nor a labelling tool.
  • The tool does not replace agricultural advising! It should be seen as an aid for personal or collective reflection about performances of orchard practices in their own contexts. Solutions should be considered locally and adapted on a case-by-case basis.
  • The designers of DEXiFruits cannot be held responsible for the results of assessment with the tool.
  • Use of this tool is a voluntary action.

The DEXiFruits tool was built by a group of researchers, engineers and instructors from INRA, technical institutes (CTIFL and IFPC) and an institution of higher education (AGROCAMPUS OUEST, Angers campus). The DEXiPM_Pomefruit tool, from which DEXiFruits is derived, was the subject of a filing with the APP (French Agency for the Protection of Programs)(IDDN no. FR.001.070018.000.R.P.2013.000.30100, attributed 30 Jan 2013), and its version 1 is property of INRA.

DEXiFruits is used under the CeCILL-C licence , and downloading the software is considered as acceptance of the licence. DEXiFruits cannot be used for commercial purposes without having previously contacted and obtained consent of the owners of the DEXi program. The CeCILL-C licence allows you to use DEXiFruits without limit under your own responsibility; the designers and owners of DEXiFruits cannot be held responsible for the results obtained. Any reuse of DEXiFruits in other software programs must follow the conditions described in the licence CeCILL-C.
