Task 2c: Contact structure due to animal movements along a supply chain: application to the spread of PRRSv and Salmonella

The organisation of the pork supply chain involved animal movements that are much more structured than in bovine herd networks. This will be considered here.

Task T2c involves similar analyses and objectives as task T2b. The difference is that in T2c we will take into account the organisation of the pork supply chain in which animal movements are much more structured than in bovine herd networks. Data on between-herd pig movements will be collected and used to model production structures and the whole primary supply chain. The defined network then will be integrated in the epidemiological models representing Salmonella carriage and PRRSv spread. A model for Salmonella has been developed by partners 1 and 2 (Lurette et al. 2008 a, b, 2009) and will be adapted here in response to the new data and users’ needs defined in WP4. The transport and lairage steps will be considered to assess the effectiveness of control measures implemented on the whole pig supply chain. These models will be used to evaluate the economic and epidemiological effectiveness of control measures (in WP3) such as purchase restrictions based on the health status of herds. These health related statuses will be defined from the within-herd models developed in WP1 for PRRSv or from the one already available for Salmonella.
