SPS - Saclay Plant Sciences

Summer School 2018

Plant epigenetics and epigenomics

July 8-13, 2018 - Centre Port Royal, Saint-Lambert (France)
For international Master's, PhD students and young post-docs

SPS Summer School 2016

The SPS Summer School 2018 is a one-week programme for outstanding and enthusiastic Master's and PhD students, as well as young post-docs, who want to acquire excellent training offered by leading scientists in plant epigenetics.

It has a clearly defined and unique profile that will provide you with interdisciplinary education in the following fields:

  • Plant epigenetics
  • Plant developmental biology
  • Plant RNA biology
  • Plant chromatin biology
  • Bioinformatics

The Summer School will bring together about 25 participants from all over the world and offer them the chance to receive scientific training in an international and rather informal atmosphere, facilitating exchanges.

Topics and invited speakers

The SPS Summer School 2018 will include:

  • theoretical modules: leading scientists will hold lectures on the topics of the summer school, giving the participants a comprehensive insight into the latest research findings and identifying key open questions in the field,
  • hands-on bioinformatics analysis of epigenomics data,
  • poster sessions,
  • visits of SPS labs,
  • a cultural excursion.

This varied programme will give plenty of opportunities for discussion with speakers and the other participants.

The Summer School will be organized in 4 scientific sessions:

1) Molecular basis of plant epigenetics / Methodologies
This will include a brief history of epigenetics, an introduction to DNA methylation, histone modifications, the spatial organization of plant chromatin, long non-coding RNAs, plant small RNAs, epitranscriptomics and the related methodologies.

  • Jonathan Weitzman (Epigenetics & Cell Fate Centre, France)
  • Aline Probst (Génétique Reproduction & Développement, GReD, France)
  • Chang Liu (Zentrum für Molekularbiologie der Pflanzen, ZMBP, Germany)
  • Cécile Antonelli (Laboratoire Génome et Développement des Plantes, LGDP, France)

2) What is the relationship between cell fate and epigenetics?
That session will be dedicated to the chromatin regulations linked to plant morphology, photomorphogenesis, the germline and flowering.
+ Practical session: Bioinformatics analysis of ChIPseq data

3) Role of the epigenetics in the integration of environmental signals
This session will address both abiotic and biotic stress, with a special emphasis on epigenetic stress memory following the stress.
+ Practical session: Small RNA analysis

  • Leandro Quadrana (Biology Institute of the École Normale Supérieure, IBENS, France)
  • Jean Molinier (Institut de Biologie Moléculaire des Plantes, IBMP, France)
  • Lionel Navarro (Biology Institute of the École Normale Supérieure, IBENS, France)
  • Jose Gutierrez-Marcos (University of Warwick, UK)

4) Transgenerational epigenetics & Plant breeding
We will in particular address the topics of inducible epigenetic variation in crops, the use of epigenetics for plant breeding, the role of natural epigenetic variation in plant speciation.
+ Practical session: DNA methylation analyses

  • Pierre Baduel (Biology Institute of the École Normale Supérieure, IBENS, France)
  • Germán Martinez (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden)
  • Étienne Bucher (Research Institute of Horticulture and Seeds, IRHS, France)
