Plant Sciences for the Future

The “International SPS Conference 2018: Plant Sciences for the Future” took place from July 4 to July 6, 2018, on the Université Paris-Saclay campus, in Gif-sur-Yvette, France.

SPS Conference 2018 1

During two and a half days, 27 scientists have presented their research through talks (keynote lecture on plant epigenetics and then 3 sessions with 16 invited speakers and 10 talks selected on abstracts). Moreover, 44 attendees presented a poster, among which 27 also benefited from a 2-min flash-talk to raise interest for their poster.

This conference attracted 130 attendees (balanced sex ratio: 60 women, 70 men) coming from French laboratories but also from foreign labs, 8 different countries and 21 nationalities were represented.

The topics of the 3 sessions (1. Nutrition, Metabolism and Environmental Interactions, 2. Developmental and Cell Biology, 3. Biotech and Plant Breeding) were broad enough for any scientist working in the field of plant sciences to propose an abstract (poster or talk). However, the sessions also included 8 focuses in order to highlight new techniques / technologies and major scientific breakthroughs. The conference received from the attendees a very positive feedback on the topics and quality of the talks (invited speakers as well as talks selected on abstracts).

SPS Conference 2018 2

The interesting scientific program and convivial atmosphere of the conference fostered interactions among the attendees. Fruitful discussions opened the way to new collaborations and post-doctoral opportunities.

The congress was followed by our international Summer School (8-13 July) on plant epigenetics, thus echoing the conference's keynote lecture.

The conference in numbers:
- 130 attendees including 41 young scientists (2 Master’s students, 21 PhD candidates, 18 post-docs) and 7 representatives of the private sector.
- 60 women and 70 men
- Labs from 8 countries (Australia, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, UK, USA)
- 21 nationalities (Algeria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, The Netherlands, Tunisia, UK, USA, Vietnam)
- 27 talks (among which 17 international and local invited speakers)
- 44 posters (including 27 flash-talks of 2 minutes)
- 3 booths
