SPS - Saclay Plant Sciences

Newsletter 5

NUMBER 5 : JULY 2017

Dear all,

You will find in this newsletter a lot of information about Research, Teaching and Training, Equipment, Innovation or Scientific animation in the SPS LabEx. You will see in particular the excellent results of the flagship projects during the first phase of the LabEx (2012-2016) and of partnership projects (SPS'Innov), as well as the results of the last call for research projects. Finally, do not forget to look at the agenda for the months to come and to note in particular the dates of the next SPS meeting (October 23-24, 2017, Versailles), the Saclay Plant'Innov' 2017 meeting (November 21, 2017, Orsay) and the second international SPS conference (July 4-6, 2018).

But first, I would like to mention the recent passing of our colleague and friend Patricio Leboeuf (Deputy Research Director of the FCS and then of the Université Paris-Saclay), who left us at the end of June, at 57 years old, taken by a heart attack after a long battle with disease. On behalf of our community, I would like to pay tribute to him for his kindness and dedication to the Université Paris-Saclay. Patricio actively supported us in building the various LabEx projects, ranging from the creation of IPS2 to the SPS-GSR project (see below) and the 3P LidEx strategic project (Plant Phenotyping Platform). We offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.

Concerning the overall evolution of the Université Paris-Saclay project, I invite you to read the report of the general assembly of the Paris-Saclay Department of Life Sciences (SdV), which took place on June 29 (downloadable here). Very briefly, the IdEx evaluation is postponed to the end of 2017 (October initially), the visit of the site will take place mid-February 2018 and the hearing in front of the jury, mid-March. The ministry is planning a legislative adjustment to facilitate the structuring of new institutions (i.e. the possibility for an institution to include several legal personalities). Claude Chappert emphasizes that the precise status, the duration of its experimentation, and the precise adaptation considered for Saclay are not yet known, but seem a priori favorable to move the Paris-Saclay project forward.

Finally, an important new milestone was reached for the Plant Sciences community, with the submission of the “SPS Graduate School of Research” project at the end of June, in response to the Investments for the Future’s "EUR" call. This project is based both on the renewal of the LabEx and its funding for a new 10-year period (2018-2027) and on the request for an additional grant to specifically strengthen Research-Teaching & Training interactions and internationalization.

Happy reading !
