Molecular mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of rice to bacterial blight (BB) disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae

Wolf B. Frommer’s team is looking for a highly motivated, and passionate Postdoc with experience in molecular biology, plant pathogen interactions and/or plant metabolic pathways to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the susceptibility of rice to bacterial blight (BB) disease caused by Xanthomonas oryzae.

The team investigates different transport mechanisms that plants use to absorb nutrients and translocate them across cell membranes. They found that sugar transporters are key susceptibility genes for BB in rice. They have successfully engieneered rice plants that are resistant to BB. Their goal is to learn more about how membrane transporters contribute to crop yield and disease susceptibility. They expect that understanding these mechanisms will contribute breeding of crop plants with higher yield and engineer robust resistance to pathogens. Their main focus is on plants yet they also study transport processes in microorganisms. Part of their work is a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop bacterial blight resistant rice varieties for smallholder farmers in developing countries in Asia and Africa. This project provide a unique opportunity to work on basic science and biotechnology simultaneously, and to contribute to a humanitarian project.

For this project, they seek a postdoctoral scientist available as soon as possible.
Candidates should have a doctoral degree and a strong background in molecular biology, genetics and/or plant biochemistry. A good understanding of plant microbe interaction, previous experience in molecular work with rice or Xanthomonas as well as genome editing are advantageous but not essential.
