PROspective - Haut-Rhin

PROspective is one of the 4 SOERE PRO strongly instrumented experimental field. Montenach et al., SEAV Colmar

PROspective has been initiated in 2001

The objectives are to characterize the agronomic value of composts and the environmental impacts of 3 different types of OWPs frequently amended in Alsace and to highlight the composting effect on these impacts.

Treatments

The half part on the left corresponds to a minimal application of inorganic N fertilizer (Sans N mineral) and the half part on the right to an optimal N fertilisation (avec N mineral) with respect to potential yields. It is further divided in 4 blocks of replicates, and each half block corresponds to a randomized repetition of the following 6 treatments:

1) Sewage sludge (BOUE)

2) Compot of sewage sludge with green wastes (DVB)

3) Compost of biowastes (BIO)

4) Farmyard manure (FUM)

5) Compost of farmyard manure (FUMC)

6) no organic amendment (TEM).

All these organic treatments are crossed with 2 levels of N fertilisation “Sans N mineral = without N mineral fertilization” and “Avec N mineral = with N mineral fertilization”.

Since 2014, the experimental protocol was modified for the part without mineral fertilization. The amount of organic amendments has increased to obtain a sufficient rate of nitrogen available for crops. On those plots, raw digestate produced after anaerobic digestate is spread as additional amendment.

Site management

The crops rotation was corn maize / winter wheat / sugar beet / malting barley.

Site instrumentation and monitoring

Site and plots are equipped for continuous monitoring of meteorological data, soil humidity, water tension and temperature. One plot of each treatment is equipped with wick lysimeters to a depth of 0.45 m. Since 2009, six large lysimeters (4m² and 1m deep, bare soil) complete the field experiment, with 2 replicates of the 3 organic treatments and control without organic amendment. They are also equipped to measure the hydrodynamic balance: soil humidity, water tension, temperature, volume of leachate.

A Large set of variables mainly including nutrients and pollutants (trace elements, PAH, PCB), are monitored on different compartments of the agro-system: organic amendments physico-chemical and biochemical characteristics, soils analytical characteristics per layer, crop yields, plants quality, rainwater chemical composition, leachate, microbial biomass and activities.

Data will be stored in a common database specifically developed for the SOERE PRO network and connected with other SOERE.

Soils, organic amendments and plants samples are kept in collection and available for further measurements.

Pedo-climatic context

The experimental site is located in Colmar (Alsace, France) with a continental climate. The soil is a calcisoil (surface layer: 24% clay, 69% silt, 7% sand / 2.4 % organic matter / pH 8.3). the average annual rainfall are 540 mm.
